A VALENTINEÕS DAY SURPRISE

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL. PIID

Q:  I am happily married for a couple of years now.  Since ValentineÕs Day is fast approaching, I am thinking of gifting my husband with something non-traditional-like something practical, unique and lasting Ð maybe an activity area where he can enjoy  without leaving the house.  Have you got some suggestions or ideas on how I can develop such an area inside our house?

A:  YouÕre a pretty creative and innovative young housewife, I should say.  As early as now, you are contemplating on what you can give your partner for a ValentineÕs Day at present.  Your idea of setting aside and decorating an area of your home exclusively for your husbandÕs entertainment and relaxation will indeed give birth to a unique, practical as well as unforgettable gift your husband will surely appreciate and cherish.  Here are tips to help you achieve your goal:

1.  You know your husband more than anybody else.  You definitely know the activities he enjoys the most.  Once you have pinpointed which one he truly prefers, concentrate your efforts and planning on that activity to be able to create his ultimate ÒprivateÓ area surprise.

2.   For instance, if heÕs into body-building, you can invest on gym equipments.  Or, if heÕs an audio-video freak, you can transform a portion of your study room or an extra bedroom as an AV Room.  Place his stereo component, TV and other video equipment in the area.

3.    You can also buy your husband new stuff like a videocam or a new, h-tech sound equipment.  Place these things in the activity area but make sure you conceal them until ValentineÕs Day so you donÕt spoil the surprise.

4.    If such an activity area is existing, you can redecorate or renovate your room with his favorite colors.  Place a sofa  bed inside the bedroom for relaxation purposes.

5.   I heÕs into drawing or arts, you may want to put a drafting table inside the room complete with a set of  paint brushes, sketch pads, drawing pencils or yokens.  Install on the walls a couple of his works on decorative frames for a loving touch.

6.    Lighting and ventilation should be both adequate specially so when the activity room does not have windows that can be opened.  If your budget warrants, you can an airconditioner installed inside the room.

A DIVORCED MOM NEEDS INTERIOR DESIGN STRATEGIES

BY: ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  While in the States, IÕve been granted a divorce from my American husband.  Since my kids area already settled with their own families, I decided to come home to the Philippines and retire here.  I am trying very hard to get on with my new life in my own country.  I want to rediscover my roots by designing my new house without looking back too much on my past.  Can you give me some ideas which I could apply on my house?

A:   This new house you are living in now signifies a sense of security and closure, both at the same time. Security, meaning you want to assure your family and friends that you can look after your  well-being, even if you have been accustomed to having someone to depend on most of your life.  Closure,  meaning you want to end that sordid chapter wherein you have to part ways with somebody you had to spent your life with and finally have the will to begin you life anew.

Going through a divorce is difficult and having done so gives a sense of relief even as it is painful.  Moving to a different place, much more, going home to the Philippines will offer you a new lease on life and a chance to leave the past behind.  As such, having a new home will help you forget.  Here are some tips for an interior makeover for a newly divorced woman just like yourself:

HAVE YOUR ONE SPECIAL SOLITARY AREA.  This can be anywhere within the confines of your home.  Choose this special place as your solitary  confinement where you can do anything you please.  You can spend quiet time inside it for prayers and meditation, catch up on your reading, write letters or just do nothing.  Make sure that you are not bothered whenever you spend sometime inside your special private sanctuary.

MAINTAIN A CLUTTER-FREE HOME.  As in any home, your own abode should be free of too much clutter.  Stick to simple and less dramatic accessories and furniture pieces.  Opt for light-colored tones/shades for your walls and ceilings to imbibe lightness of feeling.  Go for dainty colored curtains/drapes or blinds for your window treatment.  Maintain cleanliness at all times.  Place scented candles which you can light up at night for ambiance and for its therapeutic purposes.

ADEQUATE LIGHTING AND VENTILATION.  This is a must for every home.  You can also add mood lighting or focus lighting which you can install near displays or paintings on walls.

GO EASY WIT MEMENTOES.  If you really want to move on, make sure to avoid displaying too much things that remind you of your ex-husband.  These includes photos, memorabilias or any dŽcor that may trigger  your sentimental mood.

RESOLVE TO BE INDEPENDENT AGAIN.  If you have been dependent for the longest time in your life, now is the right time to be decisive and focus your energy on being dependent once again.  Remind yourself that you only have yourself to contend and bear with, thus you should concentrate on being self-sufficient by trusting yourself that you can do it and being confident in your inner drive and ability to surpass any difficulty that would come your solitary way.

A  DOUBLE BUNDLE OF JOY

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  To my pleasant surprise, I found  out that I will be giving birth to twins, but we have prepared the babyÕs room  designed for one only.  How can I have re-designed to accommodate the other one? Please help me.

A:  indeed, being a soon-to-be mom is a blessing itself, what more to two babies ?  I understand your plight, you have meticulously decorated the room good for one baby only, but donÕt worry, there are several ways by which you can conveniently convert the room for your coming twins.  However, you must remember that twins have a special innate bonding so separating them by placing each in a different room is discouraged.  Just follow these simple tips to make room for the other baby.

1.  If the baby crib that you recently bought is quite big, I suggest that you just place a plexiglass right in the middle of the crib to divide it into two.  This is a material similar to what you see in hospital nurseries. It is a lightweight, safe and clear plastic/glass material which can be used for this purpose.  At least, you need not buy a new crib for the other one.

2.  Even the are born twins, they have respective personalities quite different from each other.  You must treat each one as individually as possible.  Try to respect each others likes and dislikes if it comes to the point that they will have separate rooms.    You can color and design the rooms depending on their fancy,  most  specially if the kids are of age.  This can also help in identifying one from the other in case of identical twins of the same sex.

3.   As much as possible, allot a space for play and recreation inside the babyÕs room.

4.  Try to really know  the characteristics of each child when it comes to the eating and sleeping habits.  In case one is a light sleeper, the crib/bed must be away from windows or door.  Otherwise, this problem would hamper his growth and cause problems to his health.

5.  if your budget allows, re-paint the room or install  wallpaper in basic, simple and neutral design& color.  Re-decorating would be easier if you have light colors rather than the opposite.

6.  Opt for vertical blinds with tracking mechanism which you install on ceilings which can also serve as a divider.  This will serve its purpose when the other one is sleeping and the other is playing.  A brightly colored and durable cloth with playful design can also be used as a draw curtain which a less expensive alternative.

7.  Place all your baby needs and paraphernalia like  feeding bottles, milk, meds and vitamins on a sturdy table right in the middle of the cribs within easy and accessible reach.

8.  Give the room adequate lighting and ventilation.

9.  Keep the flooring free from rugs and carpets  since such carry dust mites and pollens which can cause allergies to the sensitive skin of the babies.

10.  When the twins are already crawling and learning to walk, it is advisable to place window & door guards.

PUTTING UP A DAY CARE CENTER

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  I am a middle-aged working mother holding office in Ortigas.  My job usually entails me to extend my working hours beyond 5 PM robbing me of precious time to spend with my two growing kids, aged 10 and 12.

Now I am thinking of putting up my own business in my own house since it is quite spacious.  I like to put a day care center for working moms.  How do I go about transforming my private home into this kind of business, yet maintaining the ÒhomeÓ ambiance for the childrenÕs sake ?

A:  I understand  your sentiments when you say that your work has been taking so much of your time that you fail to spend quality time with your kids.  If you already have the resources, this might be the right time to go for your business venture Ð a day care center right in your own home.  And since you already have a place where you would build it, all you need are tips on how to enhance and decorate it to become conducive to your prospective clients.

1.  Refrain from using metal furniture; opt for wood pieces painted with light  and pastel shades.

2.  Accessories should be downplayed a little bit.  Go for soft and multicolored pieces which appeals to kids which are also functional and decorative like alphabet/number blocks and throwpillows in various designs.

3.  If you have a garden or lanai, you can use it as an extended area by organizing games where kids could interact with each other.

4.  Avoid placing objects made of glass or items with sharp/pointed edges.  Kids are truly playful, they might break it and use it then injure themselves in the process.

5.  Provide adequate lighting & ventilation.  You can have it airconditioned,  but since your business is just starting you just can have enough windows for the mean time.

6.  Have a first-aid kit handy at all times.

7.  Maintain cleanliness and safety at all times.  Your kidsÕ parents might be meticulous

on this issue.

8.  Try to maintain the privacy of your own home.  Make the other kids understand this idea from the start.  And make this point stressed out to the parents as well.

9.  Install reliable security lock systems on your entrance/exit doors and gates.

A DRINKING SPREE IN THE HOUSE

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  At 24, I am a stable and single career woman.  I do enjoy having night-outs with close friends on weekends.  We often try-out new bars in Malate or Makati.  Name the place and we surely have been there on a weekend night.  ThereÕs one catch, though,, whenever we go out, I sometimes go overboard, meaning, I drink more than my limit.  I drive my own car which can cause problems.  So when that happens, I end up sleeping in my bestfriendÕs house.

Well for a change, I am thinking of spending our nigh outs in my place.  Aside from being less costly, it is quite safe for us, too.  can you give me some tips on how to arrange the space suited for this purpose ?  We have a spare room and a spacious garage and lawn.  Would these areas e possible options ?

A:  Well, at least, when you start doing your night-outs with friends in your own home, your Mom would surely have peace of mind.  At your age, it not all that bad to go on night-outs, but you have to set your drinking limit.  Contemplating on this idea, you should remember that your actions will always have an effect on other people.  That space in your garage can be converted for this purpose since noise and loud music is inevitable during such happenings.  HereÕs how:

a.  If your parents would allow, you can enclose that area of the garage for privacy.  And if the spare room is chosen, make sure that is soundproof to at least minimize the noise that can disturb your family members and neighbors alike.  You can also have floor carpets for additional soundproofing.

b.  Make the room as  cozy as possible.  Have big cushioned throwpillows as functional and decorative items in the room.

c.  Provide adequate ventilation.  An airconditioner is good; otherwise, have an exhaust fan to control hot and humid air inside the room.

d.  Opt for multifunctional table, folding chairs and storage cabinet.  Limit the furniture  pieces to prevent a cluttered look.  It is advisable to have a sink inside the room, too.

e.  When male friends are invited, do not place a mattress or futon bed so as not to convey any negative message.

f.   Proper lighting is a must.  Mood lights can be installed which can add to the overall look and ambiance of the room.

g.  Opt for manageable and washable flooring.  A laminated vinyl tile is recommended.  Paint the walls in light colors to make the room look bigger.

h .Watch out for electrical overload and make sure that all appliances are turned-off

when leaving the room.

i.  Maintain a clean and airy room at all times.  A musty odor would invite mold and insects to inhabit the room.  Regularly check and clean the room.

j.  Set a time limit when you do your night-outs.  You still have to consider other peopleÕs feelings, be it family members or neighbors.

K.  Try to be sober.  You are the hostess of that night-out, if you notice your friends taking too much, assess the situation and call-of the session when necessary.  Ask friends who are tipsy to just stay-over rather than drive themselves.  Girls can spend it in your room while boys can stay inside the party room.

TIPS ON PAINTING CEILINGS

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  I hired a handyman to fix and change my ceiling because it has been dirtied by drips or leaks from my roof.  I already changed several GI sheets to take care of the major problem.  Now, I want a newly painted ceiling but I am quite short in my budget already.  What tips ca you give me to be an effective painter to do the job myself ?

A:  Painting ceilings are a little difficult than painting walls since aside from straining your neck, most of the time, smooth and even application is less achieved when you are not a professional.  But are some tips to make it  a bit manageable for you.

CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE COLOR.  You can ask the paint dealer to mix the color you like.  Check if it matches your choice.  But if you do the testing at home, paint a piece of wood or a discreet portion of your wall; after it dries up you can visualize it when painted entirely on the ceiling.  Better yet, ask your dealer how many gallons would it take for such an area to be painted.

PLACE DROP CLOTHS FOR PROTECTION.  It is important  that you do this before you start painting so as not to create more drips/spills than you can handle.  If you have old show curtains or plastic covers, you can also use it for this purpose.

WEAR PROPER PROTECTION WHEN PAINTING.  Wear latex gloves used by surgeons for easy grip and handling of paint brush while being protected as well.  For feet protection, you can use old socks which you can pull over your shoes or feet to them from being splattered with paint.  As for your hair, you can buy inexpensive show caps to protect your head from paint drips.

COVER MOULDINGS, CORNICES & OTHER ELECTRICAL FIXTURES.  Before painting, be sure that you cover your mouldings & cornices, unless you prefer them to have the same color.  But normally, such architectural details serve as accent pieces so having it painted with a different color is recommended.  Any odd-shaped that can be found on your ceilings like fluorescent lighting fixtures and pinlights should be properly covered with plastic, masking tape or old newspaper to prevent them from being accidentally painted over (that is if you cannot remove them prior to painting).

FOLLOW THIS BASIC RULE IN PAINTING YOUR CEILING.  Paint your ceiling across its width rather than its length.  Start from a corner and work gradually in patches.

PAINTING THE EDGES OF THE CEILING CAN BE DONE WITH THE USE OF A BRUSH, WHICH CREATES A SHARPER, CLEANER LINE THAN A ROLLER DOES.  Make this brushed edge around the ceiling at least 2 inches wide.

CLEAN UP SPILLS IMMEDIATELY.  Wipe all spills and drips at once before it dries up.  Use a moist cloth for latex paint and one with a paint thinner for alkyd paints.

AVOID PAINT RINGS ON YOUR TABLE by gluing or taping a paper plate or newspaper on the bottom of the can.

HAVE MAKE-SHIFT BEAM/LEDGES READY.              If your ceiling is quite higher than standard, use a ledge or beam by using a sturdy piece of wood with 2 heavy duty chairs on each side.  On a ceiling over a staircase, you can set up the beam with the handrails as support.

OTHER POINTS TO REMEMBER.  Take note of the paint manufacturer or product code. This will come in handy when you need to do some re-touching works in the future.

A BACHELORÕS PAD

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q: I am quite fortunate to have made it made in the advertising world.  I am single and currently dating.  Humility aside, IÕve been with a string of girls and sometimes I would invite them to my pad which is quite ÒhomeyÓ.  My current girlfriend has not been into my place.  I want to redecorate my place before I finally invite her.  You see, I am the type of guy who wants to make a statement, specially with regards to my pad which I am quite proud  of.  Can you give me some tips on how to re-do my place?

A:  Being a meticulous guy who takes time mulling over what to do to their pads so as to impress his girl is not true for all men, I must say.  Here are some points to consider to achieve the desired effect:

1.  A bachelorÕs pad should always reduce on too much  decorative details.

2.  For the bed, you can opt for a painting or a piece of cloth mount on a board to be used as headboard for a unique look.  Anything that easily glides and blends with your wall will do.

3.  Furniture with unique textures can make a bachelorÕs pad stand out.  Another trick for the bed:  Use fur as blanket.

4.  Use pillowcases with graphic designs.   Scandinavian style is a design statement in itself.  It basically sends subliminal messages like ÒI need help fastÓ or ÒI need to be with someoneÓ.

5.  Having sculptural pieces  inside the pad also helps.  Use stools or furniture pieces with simple leg design to tone down the look.

6.  Keep electrical cords and wires out of sight.  Tuck them inside the walls for a neat, finer appearance.  Place all electrical sockets in strategic locations where you normally place major appliances.

7.  Opt for mini-blinds.  Aside from it being light and easy to maintain, you can choose your desired colors to suit the motif of your pad.

8.  Adequate lighting and ventilation also helps.  Mood lamps and other lighting fixtures play an important role in achieving the overall look of the pad.

9.  Spend a little for a beautiful flower arrangement that would make your pad even more interesting and endearing to your lady love.  When her visit is over, you can give the flowers to her as a token of your affection.

10.  Light up scented, decorative candles for an utterly, romantic ambiance.

INTERIORS FOR THE IN-LAWS

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  IÕm in a dilemma.  I have been married for about six months now.  My problem is my mom-in-law and my own mom.  You see, both our mothers live with us because at first we thought we will have no problems dealing with this set-up since we both are close to our mothers.  But the oldies donÕt see eye to eye when it comes to arranging furniture & fixtures in the house.  And since they share the same room, they tend to argue a lot on this issue.  This sometimes get into both of our nerves that it affects our own relationship.  How do we handle  this ?

A:  To begin with, its wise to give your moms a separate room.  This will allow them to have their own privacy at  their own space.  Just remember these pointers:

*  Old people love a spacious room for them to move about easily.  It is wise for them to have minimal furniture.  Stick to the basic necessities like bed, closet, side table, a chair and simple accessories.

*  Choose bedrooms that are quite far away from the street, specially if your house is situated along a main road.  The elderly hate loud noises that could disrupt their sleep or activities that require concentration.

*  Provide them a corner or a space for their altars for praying.

*  Keep the interiors simple and basic.  Choose light colors and avoid slippery-type of flooring.

*  It is suggested to give both rooms futon beds rather than foam mattress-type beds which are airy and easy to maintain.

*  Play fair at all times.  Avoid showing any special favor/inclination to either party.  You surely will never go wrong with this line of thinking.

*  Give both rooms equal attention.  For example, if your mom wants painted walls while the other prefer wallpaper, if your budget allows it then grant their wishes.  This way, you can show both that you are attentive to their needs.

*  As for the interiors outside their own rooms, carefully explain to them to leave the decision regarding its design to you and your husband.  Remember to do this nicely so as not to hurt their feelings.

A FAMILY DINE OUT SPELLS F-U-N !

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  Eating at home has become monotonous for my family.  Though I am a good cook, my children sometimes persuade us to just take them at a nearby fastfood chain for some burgers and fries.  They seem to enjoy eating outside that I thought maybe I can try doing this in the comfort of our home.  What do you think ?

A:   It sure is costly to always take your family  to restaurants or fastfoods.  Well, your problems will soon be over.  You just to be imaginative and creative to come up with ideas that will bring restaurant ambiance in the comfort of your own home.  Here are some tips to consider for your own home:

a.  You can set up a dine-out space in your garden, terrace or veranda.  If you do not have the luxury of such spaces, you can do this in a nearby park within the village or vicinity.  Do it picnic-style rather than brining handy chairs and table.

b.  You can also do it in the garage or balcony if you do not want to go out of the house.   Spruce up and liven up the area by having flower arrangements and plants inside the area.

c.  If you are doing it outside, you may put up a tent for you to use.  Just make sure that all the food are properly sealed with covers to keep out insects and flies.

d.  After taking care of the table setting, motif and flower arrangement, focus on the menu.  Make sure that you serve food ideal for a dine-out and those that would appeal to the palate of growing kids such as burgers, corn on the cob, hotdogs & BBQs.

e.  Make sure you have checked the weather condition before you schedule the dine-out.

f.  Provide a suitable background music.  If you are dining out in the evening, you can light up the place with decorative candles for a cozy ambiance.

g.  After eating, you can play board games or other playful games for the family.

Dining out need not be expensive  or to be done in a fancy restaurant.  You just have to be inventive to break the monotony of everyday routine.  You can observe this on a regular basis, either on weekends for lunch or dinner.  This is an opportunity to spend quality time with the kids since you exchanged pleasantries while eating in a relaxed ambiance.  Once in awhile, you can encourage the kids to invite their friends to join you have a dine-out.  This is also a chance for more quiet time and bonding moment with your spouse.

HOME INTERIORS FOR THE MARRYING-TYPE

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  For me, being single woman at 25 is no cause for concern.  But it like I am a time bomb about to explode, with my biological clock ticking till its batteries fail me.  But IÕm quite desperate for a serious relationship at this point.  Well, I had my own share of suitors.  They would visit me in the house for a couple of times or more; however, they would just shy away and never would come back after several visits.  IÕm pretty sure its not me nor my parents who are the culprit.  I think thereÕs something in my home interiors that reflects my personality in a bad light (if ever thereÕs such a thing).  We live in a humble house which my mother inherited from her parents.  What do you think ?  Can you give me suggestions on how I can spruce up our interiors ?

A:  If you claim there is nothing in you or your parents attitude that somehow scares the guys that visits you, then maybe, there is something missing in your interiors that could have made guys more interested in you all the more.  Be that as it may, you must remember that its not actually whatÕs inside the house that matters, its basically the ÒwhoÓ in it that counts the most.  ItÕs the kind of person that you are that makes up whatever is lacing in your home interiors.  Nevertheless, I will give you suggestions on how to make your home more enticing to your guy visitors/suitors.

1.  Choose a motif or design that speaks about who you are and what makes up your personality.  The accents or accessories you display inside the room reflects who you truly area.  If you favor family portraits, photos of family members and mementoes given by loved ones, it shows that you are a family-oriented type of woman.  Refrain, though, from displaying too much of it for he might think that youÕre a woman who can away from her family.  As for items of antiquity like vases or jars, such evokes a mysterious and passionate character that most men find appealing in a woman who usually gives the impression of a good wife material.

2.  Maintain a clean and tidy home at all times.  This trait impresses the guy more if you can keep the home clutter-free.  Cleanliness and being organized that not all women are blessed with.  For sure, most men would fall for a woman who can manage a healthy and clean surrounding for her future family.

3.  Go for plain or neutral tones for your wall finish.  It connotes finesse and femininity.  Otherwise,  dark colored shades normally invokes negative or heavy feelings when inside.

4.  Play with lights.  Install mood and directional lighting.  It enhances the look of the room if such are strategically located in the room.

5.  Install piped-in music.  Music triggers a barrage of emotions that makes a person susceptible  to suggestions.  It  also fills in the gap when you and your suitor gets awfully awkward with each other.

6.  When your suitor visits, offer some food and drinks which you can share to make him at ease.

7.  Be minimal in the use of accessories in the living room.  Some throwpillows and decorative candles would do.

8.   As much as possible, do not overdo in displaying your diploma and achievements in school, spots & the like because this would only intimidate any guy who plans to court you.

GIVE YOUR WALLS A FASCINATING MAKE-OVER

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  I am planning to change my drab-looking walls painted with plain enamel paint finish.  I want it re-painted to be more presentable in time for my relativesÕ visit from the province.  What can I do to make my walls more attractive and pleasing ?

A:  I suggest that you do these easy glazing  techniques applicable for use on plain painted walls like what you have n your home.  Creating these interesting and easy finishes on your walls, however, entails creativity and patience to do it yourself.

Achieving such finishes can be done through GLAZING, a technique in which a flimsy, thin coat of paint (which is actually the glaze) is applied over a completely dry base coat.  Here are other techniques from which you can choose the appropriate finish for your home.

SPONGING TECHNIQUE.  In using this particular technique, all you would need is an adequate supply of clean natural sponges.  The procedure is simple; try to measure the wall to be painted then divide it into 3x3 feet square areas (90x90 cms).  Begin with  dabbing  a clean sponge on a coat of glaze and apply it on small and manageable areas.  Taking a new and clean sponge, apply glaze in a similar dabbing pattern over the next 3-footr square areas.  Continue the same procedure until the entire walls are finished.

STIPPLING TECHNIQUE.   Materials you will need for this technique are your reliable paint roller, a stippling tool and a patient working partner to assist you as you apply the glaze on your walls.  Start with applying the glaze with a roller.  While the paint is sticky to the touch, poke or jab a stiff brush into to produce desired pattern or effect.  Your buddy would be your best handyman since as you apply the glaze, the other follows with a stippling tool.  One very important tip, though, make sure that you use oil-based (alkyd) paints since a slow-drying kind of paint is needed for this procedure which a water-based (latex) paint cannot produce.

RAG-ROLLING TECHNIQUE.  Again, you would need a generous supply of clean rags and a reliable partner to assist you.  the procedure requires you to begin with applying a glaze of oil-based (alkyd) paint over a dry alkyd base.  While the base is still tacky or sticky to the touch, use strips of cloth, preferably cotton, either rolled, folded or crumpled to blot oil part of the glaze in a pattern.  Your painting partner would just prepare clean rags dipped in the glaze to replace the ones you are using as they fill up with glaze.  In this manner, your momentum will not be hindered if you choose to do it by yourself.

In all the above glazing techniques, you will use a paint or roller pan for easier painting.  It is suggested that before you pour the paint, line the roller pan with a large plastic bag or aluminum foil.  After you finish, you can easily remove the lining and thereÕs no mess to clean up, anymore.  You just have to be creative to produce the desired effect/pattern.  Then you will find your walls all spruced-up and lively.

ÒFENG SHUIÓ FOR YOUR HOMES

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

The art of FENG SHUI originated from Ancient China.  It was originally intended to be used in locating burial sites for the hierarchy.  Almost all the houses for the emperors during that time had to undergo the customary feng shui treatment by no less than the experts.

In modern times, feng shui gained popularity when affluent  Chinese families and businessmen has their homes  and offices constructed or renovated as per recommendations made by the feng shui masters.  But the fact remains that the elements of design and the application of appropriate motifs depending on the size and location of the area concerned plays a vital link in the overall aura of the place.  The materials used for it also plays a very important part in achieving the desired effect.  Feng shui,  no matter how broad and wide in scope, still hold true for those who practice and believe its power.  To the believers, it brings good luck, fortune and fame.  Though it covers a lot of ground from the placement of furniture, windows, doors, positioning of the house, location of land, among others; you do not really have to change what has been existing all along once the experts advises you something to the contrary.  Feng shui  masters can prescribe gadgets such as chimes, metals, Ònatural elementsÓ, chi mirrors and the like to attract good vibrations and repel negative vibes.

Today, not only Chinese but also Filipinos are avid believers of this ancient art. The mere ocular inspection, however, of an expert can be quite costly.  But for these adamant followers, the price is no match for the wealth and good luck they believe will befall them.  Feng shui teaches how to be at peace with nature, the earth and its elements like water, fire, air and soil.  It teaches you how to use such to your advantage without causing undue harm to yourself and to earthÕs essential components.  Here are some points of reference with regards to Feng shui:

MAIN DOOR.  Experts believe that the actual placement/location, size and even color of your main door affects the inflow of good chi in your home.  The direction where such is facing also is guided by  this practice.  East side represents wood, West side represents gold and metals, South side represents fire, North side represents water.

FENCE.  The height and materials used for the fence also affect the influx of good or bad vibes into your homes.  Normally, experts advise the use of minimal rocks in the construction of the fence for they believe that such stunt growth in all aspects.

LAND TOPOGRAPHY.  This pertains to the outline or form of the land which somehow affects the chi of the owners or occupants.

STATE OF THE LOT/LAND.  If the physical condition of the lot/land is quite on the negative side, Feng shui masters usually adapt certain materials or gadgets to counteract the not so good vibes, like an aquarium, potted live plants placed in a certain portion of the room where negativity is much concentrated.  The use of water invites energy.  For a door placed against another door, the use of chimes is prescribed.

LOCATION OF LOT/LAND.  If your bedroom door is facing the stairs, the concept is quite acceptable in Feng shui, although a gadget is used to counteract the bad chi that can immediately go inside the room.  A bathroom placed against the stairs is a big no-no.  the experts would surely ask you to relocate the bathroom to avoid misfortunes.

TOILETS/BATHROOMS.  These should not be placed directly under or beside a bedroom or a place of rest for it is believed that such suck oneÕs energy and replace this with negative chi.

COLOR AND MEASUREMENT.  The windows should at least compliment the size of the house.  Opt for bright colors to  lighten up the aura /ambiance of the interiors.

SECOND-HAND FETISH

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  I love to look at and buy second-hand furniture.  Aside from it being less costly, I can do some remodeling of my own to copy a design I saw in the magazines.  But sometimes, when I get to buy one, it only ends up in my storage room since my work also keeps me busy.  There were times that I forget all about it until I stumble upon it by accident.  I really cannot help myself from second-hand buying.  I know I can find use for these items.  Any ideas which you can share to me ?  How about some tips on what to look for when buying a second-hand furniture ?

A:  I understand perfectly well  your reason for opting to buy second-hand furniture.  With so many surplus shops that sprout everywhere, its no wonder that second-hand items appeal not only to you, but to the masses, in general.  If you have noticed, most second-hand furniture takes on an antique look that makes them all the more attractive.   This is specially true of pieces made of Narra wood which is a sturdy and har wood.  Here are tips to get you by:

1.  Possess a keen eye for a good bargain.  Select a piece not for its shape alone, but for its good craftsmanship.

2.  Be cautious of just buying an item because you fancy it.  It is wise to be meticulous even if its only second-hand item that you are buying.

3.  Try to find out is the supplier is reliable/reputable.  If they are, you can always come back to them or even order what you like.  You can also reserve items once they can contact you.

4.  Buy only item which feature unique and intricate designs which are normally found in expensive and authentic items.

5.  Check if the finishes are also authentic.  Most second[-hand items are just painted over to look like the original.

6.  Even at surplus shops or flea markets, you can still ask for a warranty wherein they can write it down on the receipts together with their contact number.

7.  Check for termites or insects within the nooks and crannies of any wooden item to be sure.

8.  If the item is claimed to be antique, check form the supplier how old the furniture item might be.

9.  Make sure that such items when bought blends well with your existing motif or home interiors so that it will not end up in your storage area.

10.  For items you have bought and donÕt have any use of, you can have it re-sold at a much cheaper price.  Organize your own sale so that instead of such ites being a clutter, you can earn extra money from it.

MY SECRET  HIDEAWAY

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  Now that we can afford to have a house of our own, my husband and I want a special look for our bedroom.  Since both of us are sensual persons, we  want a room that is enjoyable and enticing so as perk up our sexual intimacy.  Please give me some suggestions on how I can achieve this.

A:  Frankly speaking, having a well-designed or well-planned bedroom, for that matter, takes more than professional acumen or creative imagination.  It is basically the love and emotions you have for your partner that makes it more special. It would be much better if you can plan it together.  Get his ideas and suggestions and compliment it with your own to come up with one great design.  HereÕs some ideas which you can incorporate with your chosen design:

If your budget warrants it, you can install a Jacuzzi  near the bedroom.  If you have kids,

however, it is advisable to have it covered or enclosed for safety reasons.  Having an organized and uncluttered look is  the key to a well-designed bedroom.  Keep the furniture pieces to a minimum essential to maintain a spacious look.  Light up scented candles before you retire at night.  They donÕt only ÒromanticizeÓ the room, it also masks ay damp smell inside it.  It also sends a signal to your partner that you want an intimate night with him.  Having directional lighting changes the ambiance.  Dimmers, sconces or decorative lamps are options to achieve a romantic effect.  This also creates drama for an intimate moment with your partner.

It is important to remember that the room is for both of your sensual pleasure.  Men, by nature, prefers simplicity in design, thus avoid being too decorative so as not to overcrowded.  Try to stick to simple lines to soften the masculine appeal, if ever.    If the room is airconditioned, opt for curtains or draperies as window treatment.  Go for not so solid colors to make the room feel spacious.  Compliment the colors of the curtains with the overall color scheme of the room.  Otherwise, you can go for blinds which are less expensive and easy to maintain.

Make sure that the bedroom is always clean and tidy.  Because any room even if beautifully designed when poorly  maintained losses  its appeal.  Have designated places for all your respective personal effects.  Be organized.  Having piped-in music installed also contributes a lot to have that perfect, intimate and cozy romatic & secret hideaway you both desire.

KEEPING MONEY AND VALUABLES IN YOUR HOMES

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  It has been my practice to save and safekeep some of my money inside the house.  Please give me some tips on how I can hide valuables safely.

A:  As a matter of fact, keeping your money and valuables inside the house is not really recommended.  But with several cases of Òbank runÓ cases, I cannot really blame you; although, putting such in the safety of a bank is still the best way to safekeep your valuables and important papers.  There are several reasons why there are still people who prefer keeping money inside their homes.  Accessibility is the prime reason since you do not have to walk or drive to the nearest bank to deposit or withdraw money.  Secondly, comfortability and security that when you need cash anyday or anytime, such is readily available.  And lastly, some people lack trust and confidence in our banking system.  But if you insist on placing money and valuable items in you homes because you feel comfortable and safer with this idea, then here are some tips which you can follow to get some piece of mind:

1.  If your house is under construction, it is wise to provide a specific location within the house where you can safekeep your money and valuables.  You can have it fabricated so it cannot be moved anywhere else.  This way, your valuables are concealed from view of other people other than those who know it exists.  But importantly, limit the number of people who knows where your vault is located.

2.  The topmost portion of your cabinet or closet can be an alternative idea provided that you and those closest to you only knows where it is.  Proper concealment is the key factor to effective safekeeping of money within the house.

3.  A shelf on the lower part of a side cabinet would also serve the purpose.  For safety, make sure that such is complete with superior locking system. Remember that whenever you need to open it, you should do so in private to avoid future problems.

4.  If you can afford it, buying a durable and reliable safety vault/box is highly recommended.  Not only it is made of safe-proof steel, it also has an effective lock combination and you can have it custom-made to suit your personal requirements.  You can also opt to have it lined up with asbestos to make it fireproof as another preventive measure.

5.  Having an attic or basement also helps.  You can allocate a portion of these areas for safekeeping  your money and other valuables.  Just make sure that these area is not damp to prevent mildew from damaging your valuables.  Provide adequate ventilation to at least minimize this sort of problem.

6.  A minimal amount of money can be kept inside canisters or covered jars in your kitchen area.

7.  Take pictures of your valuables like jewelry, money, land titles, passports, among others for record purposes and this will come in handy whenever theft or burglary occurs.

8.  It is also wise to have pertinent documents photocopied for extra file/record.

9.  Secure all cabinet doors and drawers with a quality lock system.  Always the carry the keys and have an extra pair secretly hidden for emergency.

10.  In case of burglary or theft, never attempt to alter the scene of the crime for investigation purposes.

RAINY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN !

BY ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  Unfortunately, my home is situated in a low-lying area and is very much prone to flooding.  Now that is rainy season once again, this is my perennial problem because of too many hassles caused by flood waters.  Please give me some tips so as to safeguard my family, furniture and appliances.

A:  With the unpredictability of our weather, nowadays, it is important that you are ready whenever floodwater rises.  The worst scenario is when you reach home after a heavy downpour, floodwater has risen and has caused horrendous damage to your home and properties.  Here are some practical tips which you can follow to avert the inevitable flooding which is the problem of your area:

a.  If your budget warrants, it is best to change location.  Otherwise, if your house is only one-storey, it is best to have a second floor constructed wherein you put to safety your family and your properties.

b.  Make sure that your canals and drainage are clean and devoid of garbage because once floodwater comes in, all the dirt/garbage would also flow in your home.

c.  It is wise to have your kitchen area elevated.  Use cement reinforced steel for the flooring.

d.  Since you are in a flood prone area, opt for sofa sets and chairs upholstered in leatherette and are lightweight.  These items are easier to move around when needed.

e.  Avoid placing carpets and rugs.

f.  Be always prepared.   Store canned food, drinking water, batteries, portable radio upstairs for emergency purposes.

g. It is also wise to have a new comfort room constructed in the upper floors in case floodwater tends to stay for a couple of days or more.

h.  During rainy seasons, it is best to have somebody left in your house.  Post your contact numbers so they can easily get in touch with you.

i.  Avoid using porous materials for your flooring so as not to absorb water and moisture which would cause stale odor when floodwaters recede.

j.  Immediately clean the floors  since bacteria abounds in floodwaters.  Disinfect the area as much possible.

k.  Place a cemented door, if possible, to pose as barrier to at least lessen the flow of water coming inside the house.

l.  If you have bought a land in such  a flood-prone area, construct the house much higher than the level of the road to at least minimize, if not eradicate, the problem of flooding.

m.  Safeguard all your electrical appliances by putting it on higher grounds.  Cover all electrical outlets and turn-off the main switch to prevent accidents,

n.   For things that are too heavy to move, make sure that you tie them with a sturdy rope tied around a post inside the house to prevent  it from being moved by floodwaters.

A VERY VALID SET-UP

BY: ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  I must say that I was in the peak of  my career coupled with a happy family life when tragedy struck.  I got involved in a vehicular accident which rendered me paraplegic, someone who has lost control of her lower extremities.  Now, I move around in a wheelchair and thanks to my family and friends who have never let go of me during my trying times.  Almost a year has passed and I am now living my second lease on life as a domesticated wife and mother.  But because I have limited motion, can you give me some tips on how to go about decorating my house which I very serious about right now.  Thanks and more power.

A:  It is truly a blessing to have a strong support group from your family and friends.  Though you might view it otherwise, let it serve as a reality check for you, your family and your strong faith in God.  You are right, get yourself busy and pre-occupied so as to take your mind off self-pity and restlessness.  Here are some tips:

1.  For obvious reasons, it is wise to transfer or move the masterÕs bedroom to the ground floor.  This will remove undue stress to you and your family.

2.  Make your bedroom spacious and devoid of clutter.  This will allow freer movement without undue accidents.  Arrange your bedroom that is convenient for you and your wheelchair to move about.  Place all immediate needs like medicines, books, remote control on a side table beside the bed for easy access.

3.   Allocate  a special area in the house where you can hold personal physical exercises and your regular therapy sessions for a faster recovery.

4.  If you do not require a private area for exercise/therapy, your own private room can be an alternative idea where you can meditate, listen to your favorite music and do your reading.

5.  Provide ramps for your stairs, porches or verandas for easy access.

6.  Colors play a vital role in your recovery  Place bright, cool and relaxing colors  that are pleasant to the eyes.  This helps  alleviate stress and depression as compared to dark and earthly tones.

7.  Having a garden  where you can look after a variety of plants and flowers can be a great stress-reducer.  You can cut flowers in your garden and arrange them in beautiful vases which you can use to decorate your living room.  Who knows if you have the hand in flower-arranging then you can do it as a money-earning hobby.

8.  Try to maintain easy to clean furniture pieces.  This allows less strenuous activity for you which could facilitate in your  early recovery.

9.  If your budget allows, you can install smooth floor finishes like parquet or marble which causes less friction on your wheelchair.  It is also easy to maintain.

10.  Try to widen all your door openings  to accommodate mobility.  If this is not feasible, try do it on your bedroom door for easy in and out of your wheelchair.

11.  Put hand=grabs in strategic places like comfort room, stairways, doorways or hallways.  This would come in handy when you are able to stand and walk by yourself.

12.  Have an electrician install lighting fixtures on dark corners where you most often stay.

13.  Limit the use of area rugs, doormats and carpets.  These may cause accidental fall or slippage when you move around the house.

FIT THOSE KIDS IN !

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

Q:  I am a mother to a growing brood of six kids. Its not that I am complaining, ours Is a very happy family specially when all the kids are around.  WhatÕs been bothering me is the constant nagging of my two eldest kids, both teenage son and daughter, who wants to have their own rooms.  Although I can give in to their wants, our house is not spacious enough to accommodate to it and my  budget is not enough at this time for a room/house renovation.  If we give in to their whims, we could only provide a small area for each  still within the confines of their younger siblingÕs room.  Help me on how to go about this problem.

A:  I agree that family togetherness and bonding is very essential in the molding of the respective personalities of your children.  Surely, there will come a time when privacy and individuality is to be demanded by each one, so you must be ready for it.

FOR THE YOUNGER ONES.  As much as possible, give each child a  separate bed of their own  be it a double or triple-deck bed.  This saves on space and less costly instead of buying new ones.  Require them to make over their respective beds every morning.  Opt for wooden deck beds rather than metal ones which is rust-free which can cause tetanus when your child has a wound or cut.  . Provide each one with individual closet space for clothes & drawers for personal things.  To save on space, you can have pull-out drawers installed under their deck beds or hung cabinets.   Go for light color scheme, painting the room with dark colors makes it smaller.  Its also not suitable for a kidÕs room to have heavy colors.  Provide sufficient lighting and ventilation inside the room.  This is very important specially if you do not have a separate study room.  You can also provide air vents for continuous airflow.  Implement a clean and orderly room at all times, smaller kids should learn how to arrange their toys and personal stuff every after use.

FOR THE OLDER KIDS.  Try to separate the boys from the girls by giving them separate beds and separate rooms.  If such is not feasible, in one room, you can divide it into two and allow them to choose the paint color of their rooms.  Likewise, persuade them to decorate it according to their tastes for it allows self creative expressions which is a part their growing-up years.  Be there as guide if needed for suggestions.  Adequate lighting & ventilation sis almost always a must.  They should be responsible for their respective rooms.  Enough closet  space for clothing is recommended and install hung cabinets for space-saving techniques.  For manageable alternative for window treatment, install min-blinds instead of curtains/drapes.  Try to maintain furniture pieces to a few very important pieces like a study table cum dresser and chair.  It would make the  room less cluttered and cramped.

BRING ROMANCE TO YOUR BEDROOM

BY:  ZUSIE S. TIMBOL, PIID

It seems sadly incongruous that the bedroom is by far the most personal room in the house, yet, the most neglected.  Perhaps the reason is that it is not usually on public view; therefore, a housewife may take this excuse for making it less enticing to her husbandÕs view.  It may come from a primeval instinct that beds played an important role in their lives.  Most people would like to have their beds in a place secluded from the routine of everyday life.  The bedroom is a place where privacy is respected and where important matters are discussed.  It is best that the housewife create the mood for romance a bedroom is entitled to.  Here are some tips to achieve this:

WINDOW TREATMENT.

WALL TREATMENT

BED TYPES

FURNISHINGS

FLOOR TREATMENT

LIGHTING

ODDS AND ENDS

SPACE SAVERS

A lot of homeowners now sell their houses for a more compact unit in either a condominium or townhouse.  Blame it on the costliness of owning and maintaining a house and the rising value of residential property.  A condominium has a lot of advantages.  For one, security is provided for unit owners.  Lesser expense in home furnishings is incurred, for another.  However, space could be a problem.  Sometimes, unexpected guests may arrive, entailing accommodation.  Perhaps your family grows sooner than you expected.  Here are some suggestions to solve the problem:

1)  HANGING BEDS.  Suspend a mattress from the ceiling by using a wooden plank and ceiling hoist.  Paint the plank the same color as the ceiling.  The advantage of this such an innovation is that the hanging bed can be hauled right up the ceiling, leaving the whole floor clear for other activities for the day.

2)  SPLIT-LEVEL BEDS.  The whole bedroom is placed one level higher than the door height.  Lower space can be used for other purposes like closet space.  Designers still prefer this type because it brings interest to the whole room.

3)  ROLL-UP MATTRESS OR JAPANESE-STYLE BEDS.  A rubber mattress can be rolled up and fixed in a manner that fits the interior design.  It is recommended for children who need mattresses for play.

4)  FOLD-AWAY BEDS.  These beds can be raised and tilted to a cabinet or recessed box type design on the wall.  They are provided with mattresses which are fastened to the bed legs and automatically unfold when used.  They come in handy when unexpected guests drop by.  Space saved can be used for other activities.

5)  PULL-OUT BEDS.  These are beds pulled out like drawers and usually have ballcasters and are pushed back during daytime.

6)  SOFA BEDS.  As the name connotes,  this type is a seat by day and a bed by night.  As such, its armrest & backrest are not permanently constructed.

7)  CABINET BEDS.  It cascades in varied levels and provide sleeping & siting platforms as well as a useful drawer.
